One Day Road Trip – Beach Cities from Encinitas to Mulholland Drive.

I am starting to offer “One Day Road Trip workshops.” The intent is to teach a very small single-car group of people how to use their cameras to capture their imagination in various situations. I do that by showing you how to decide what we want to shoot, and how to use their cameras to capture the needed images for a wide range of photographic targets, from a single image, to multiple image HDR panoramas.

This workshop worked the San Diego to L.A. route from the south, north. The next time, we will work from the north to the south, ending with a sunset somewhere along the coast.

The day went something like this, Drive and talk about options for the next target, and plan those shots while driving. Pull over at the target, and shoot the images we discussed, plus a few non planed shots. Then drive again, discussing the post production that those captured images will go through, and plan the next stop. … We did that all day long.

For example, this day, the first stop was in Encinitas, where we visited the art gallery of Kirk Saber. This is an Image of Kirk and Renee in the gallery. It is a multi image stitched panorama. You can click on the image to see a larger version.

We stopped, and started, all along the way. … Here we did some light painting in Venice. This is a combination of 10 long exposure images.

Steve’s new Board

My nephew was very proud of his new Surfboard.

The board was built, owned, and used by a famous local shaper, builder, and surfer. Props to anyone that can identify the local legend from his logo.

I really like this image. I also like the vertical version. … I think they should be hanging side by side on some wall somewhere.

High places are wonderful! … I think I might start a project, shooting from all the buildings I can. Does anyone have any connections to other penthouse owners?

That sounds like a good thing to do. 😉

Early last month, I had the privilege of being a vendor at the Beverly Hills, Greystone Mansions version of the Concourse d’Elegance.

Needless to say, I had a great time in a beautiful venue.

The Concourse d’Elegance at the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, was a great learning experience with my friend Lois. I learned some things about showing my images to crowds of people. … I sold nothing … But I earned a thousand things that I had not had before. …

I learned that most people like the work I do. They would stand for quite a bit of time and just look at my images, asking a question now and then. … I learned the young people, very young people, would walk by with their hands in their parent’s hands, and say, “Wow! That’s cool.” Even the other artists liked my work, and wondered why they had never seen me before. … All that felt really good.

And a magazine asked for a submission of three images, along with a short article for publication. Great!

And I chose this green Palm Beach labeled Ferrari as the image to go with this post because I think the car is beautiful.

Yellow Flames on Red Rod

Sunday the 11th, I will be at the Greystone Mansion Concours d’Elegance in Beverly Hills. I have some framed images and a bunch of prints that will be available.

Saturday, I will be loading in my setup from one to five pm. Then the place will be locked up until Sunday morning. You should check out some of the cars that are going to be there. … With any luck, I will be able to make some contacts to shoot another set of images!

Heading West

Heading West is not just a direction on the planet, it is a direction for the future. …

Horace Greeley did say this, “Go West young man, go West!” But, he lifted the intent from John B. L. Soule, an Indiana journalist, phrase, “Go West, young man, and grow up with the country”

To me, Heading West is heading to the future. In this image it is a railroad track leading to clear blue skys, out from under a dark cloud. … But, the track is set, you cannot vary from a track. With luck, our track will lead mankind to the stars.

The Little Boat That Could

In the past, I have been feeling like this little boat, continually working my little effort, and not seeing much change.

But lately, things have seemed to be moving forward. Once my little boat finally started the mass moving, it is still moving, and all the continued effort seems to be additive, and the movement is accelerating.

Toot, Toot. Throw some more coal onto the fire!

Big Red 1938 Ford Truck

This is a really cool 1938 Ford truck.

A few people will not like that I am in the image as a reflection, but, in this image, I did that on purpose. It was a way of taking credit for my work. … Next time, I will take two versions of the image, one with me, and one without me. Options are always good.

That is the way I shoot images. I do the homework first, planing all the shots I intend shooting, and then I shoot those shots, and I am open for unexpected shots that are sometimes very interesting. … After the shoot, and after the editing, I reconstruct what the shoot became, and adjust for the next shoot.

Dock at the Acapulco Mexican Restaurant Y Cantina in San Pedro

Two Cheese Enchiladas, Rice and Beans, $9.

Just to let you know that we had dinner here, just after sunset, and I liked it very much.

We sat out on the patio, without heaters turned on, and it was wonderful.

I shot this image from the seat next to where I was sitting, just to get a little closer to the water. … As it is, you can read the restaurants name on the sea wall if you twist your eyes a little. In the background, you can see the Thomas Vincent Bridge, and on the right you can see the larger cranes that were loading a container ship as we sat there.
