My SmugMug Gallery site has been upgraded.

I am very happy to say that my SmugMug galleries have been upgraded! Wahoo! I have been wrestling with those demons for the past few days. Now, I can say that I am happy to have upgraded!

A photograph is almost always yesterday’s news, “History.”

Almost always, but photographs can also twist our minds a little. As captured moments of history, they can be islands, a physical island capturing the fleeting moment in a bubble of crystalline time. While the real moment continues its way moving deeper into the past of our lives, drifting further from our conscious mind. Even now, we can watch the captured moment recede into the darkness of our lost memories. … The island of the photograph, like a time machine, can transport us to that moment, forever.

Not only can the photograph transport us back to that moment, that photograph can transport anyone who views the image to that very moment, no matter how far into the future they are viewing the image. The children of your children’s children can see, and experience, the moment you have been captured in.

I have been a working photographer for a long time. … With various side trips into Live Theater, Lighting, New Media Journalism, Teaching, and Computers. … Those tools help me in my work. … I like to help find the beauty in all people, places, things. And, I like to post those visions into the future.

An iPhone Self Portrait for Facebook

Where do most of my Facebook profile images come from?

Self portraits, 🙂 Yes. We all do them. …

Often, I have to be somewhere other than at my computer working, and other than shooting elsewhere. … Just waiting, waiting for anything, Godot, an appointment. … Whatever.

So I grab my little iPhone, and shoot a few images at arms distance, and then I play. I have almost 120 iPhone applications that are dedicated to image manipulation, after the shoot editing. It is a kind of digital playground. …

After I play with all the tools on the iPhone, quite often I find a way to use a semblance of the effects on my real images.

Images of Today

by Jack Foster Mancilla

When taking photos, some people judge what they see as unattractive. … I say,

“Quit judging your ephemeral beauty in todays images on your imaginary vision of your yesterdays image. Instead, look at the image of todays moment, and use todays image as a pointer to tomorrow. … To any image taken today, your five years into tomorrows self will always say, “See. Why can you not capture me like that guy did five years ago? I was beautiful then.”

After the Sunset

Let us speak of sunsets and the time just after the sun has gone. Here is one of those images. …

Usually, I like clouds to grab the light from the sun as it slips over the horizon and out of my view, but it lights the remaining, high altitude, clouds very nicely. … On this evening, there were no clouds. I was a little disappointed for the nonce, because I always think about what I am planning to shoot before I head out to shoot. … The weather chose to ignore my planing, and the sky remained cloudless. …

Still, I looked at the sky, and what was there, and I thought it beautiful.

Jack, Bill, Gustavo, Jonathan, and Jack, on stage at the Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego

This is really just a little taste of what will go into the Snapshots Music & Arts Foundation site. Today we shot Gustavo Romero as he was rehearsing. The Snapshots Music & Arts Foundation, is collecting incredible pieces of music, video, and still images of some fantastic musical artists.

This image is the group from the Snapshots Foundation, and Gustavo.

An old video for a friend. … And I may add videos in the future

Yesterday, I had friend tell me that he liked my stupid little videos. So I thought I would test the water and see how they go over with a couple from the past. … And I will probably do some more for all my shoots and see how that works for me and my workflow.

A long time ago, it seems very long ago, I lived in Denmark. And, somewhere between a long time ago, and a longer-than-a-short-time-ago, I did this little video about something for a reason I no longer remember.
